The Big Switch Off
January 2027 - Is your business ready?
What is the PSTN Switch Off?
The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is the traditional copper-wire telephone system that has served the UK since the 1800s. In January 2027, BT Openreach will permanently switch off this network, marking the end of an era for analogue telecommunications.
As of 5th September 2023, BT Openreach initiated a national stop-sell for both PSTN and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) services. This means no new services can be purchased, and existing services cannot be modified.
All businesses and homes currently using traditional phone lines will need to move to internet-based phone systems before the switch off date. This isn't just a replacement - it's an opportunity to upgrade to modern communications with better features and lower costs.

Frequently asked questions
When is the PSTN Switch Off happening?
BT Openreach has announced the traditional analogue telephone network will be switched off in January 2027. However, as of September 2023, they have already stopped selling new PSTN and ISDN services.
Why is the PSTN being switched off?
The PSTN has formed the infrastructure for UK telecommunications since the 1800s and has become outdated and costly to maintain. With demand for higher speeds and bandwidth, BT is switching to a fully digital network to meet the demands of the modern era.
Will I lose my phone number?
No. When transitioning to internet-based phone systems, you can keep your existing telephone number. We handle the porting process for you, ensuring your business maintains its established identity.
What happens to my broadband?
If you're using ADSL or FTTC broadband that runs over an analogue PSTN telephone line, you may need to upgrade your connection. Full fibre (FTTP) connections or SoGEA are not affected by the switch off.
What about alarm systems and other devices?
All technology that uses the PSTN network will be impacted, including security alarms, fire alarms, telecare devices, and payment terminals. We recommend contacting your equipment supplier to check compatibility with digital phone lines.
When should I make the switch?
As soon as possible. Don't wait until the last minute as this could result in disruptions to your business. Switching early also means you can start benefiting from lower costs and better features immediately.
